Kavre Sewa Samaj holds festival greetings and a discussion on current affairs

Kathmandu, 11 Asoj. Marking Vijaya Dashami and Deepawali, Kavre Sewa Samaj held a tea gathering and discussion on current affairs on Saturday.

Speaking on the current situation and on public service delivery, Umesh Prasad Mainali, former chairman of the Public Service Commission, said the Gen Z movement began because young people could see no future for themselves, faced with the delays that pervade government offices and with the same faces holding political leadership for so long.

Former Finance Secretary Dr. Rajan Khanal noted that a global tariff war has begun. Just as Nepal was absorbing an external shock from rising costs, with India struggling to import oil from Russia and Iran, the Gen Z movement added an internal shock, he said.

The Gen Z generation expects that once they apply online for a service such as a no-objection letter, it should arrive ready on their phones. Instead, government offices hold them up over one thing or another, and that frustration has become a problem.

If the structures destroyed during the protests can be rebuilt by cutting other spending, that too can get the economy moving, he said, as would making services easily available online, as the Gen Z movement has demanded. "The economy is not in a bad state. We have only absorbed some shocks."
